WILL ‘PROJECT TAPESTRY’ BE THE NEW INTERNET READER?
All in one, where readers can read all the content available on internet in one application
The developers of Twitterrific are attempting to design an application where users can read almost all content available on the internet in one place.
The landscape of online media is fragmented. News, information, and updates originate from myriad sources and has now become almost impossible to keep track of information scattered in multiple platforms.
From blogs to microblogs, social networks to weather alerts, webcomics to earthquake warnings, photos to RSS feeds, the content sprawls across countless platforms. Keeping up requires cycling through an endless array of apps and websites and is extremely time consuming.
Twitterrific, developed by The Iconfactory, was a pioneering macOS and iOS client for the popular social networking platform, Twitter, now known as X. It held the distinction of being the initial Twitter desktop client available for macOS. Offering real-time access to “tweets” or micro-blog posts on Twitter website, users could seamlessly view and publish their own content.
After almost 16-years of operation, Twitterrific abruptly shut down last year amid Twitter’s crackdown on third-party apps. In response, its developer, Iconfactory, has taken to Kickstarter to launch Project Tapestry.
Project Tapestry aims to create an interface similar to an internet reader for the wider web. This app aims to serve as a comprehensive “universal, chronological timeline.” Its aim is to source content from federated social media networks like Mastodon and Bluesky and aggregate any RSS feed available.
Additionally, it promises access to crucial governmental data sources, including National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) satellite imagery and US Geological Survey (USGS) earthquake data.
But tapestry will not be able to pull in posts from Facebook, Instagram, Threads or Twitter at the moment in one place.
Project Tapestry asks: “What if you had one app that gave an overview of nearly everything that was happening across all the different services you follow?”
The team says all updates will be posted in one place in the same order with no algorithm or Artificial Intelligence (AI) deciding what you should see.
Once you identify the content you wish to interact with, Tapestry offers the convenience of seamlessly opening that post in your preferred app, allowing you to access the content from its interface.
However, Tapestry’s design is not to replace your preferred apps but to augment and streamline your browsing experience, assisting you in identifying where you would like to concentrate your attention.
