The new app will have the comment section and creator profiles on the side of the feed to provide a more immersive experience.
It’s not just scrolling anymore. In an attempt to provide a redefined outlook on how we consume social media, TikTok has unveiled a completely new app optimised exclusively for Apple’s recently launched VR headset – the Vision Pro.
The new app promises a more interactive experience, allowing users to seamlessly scroll through their For You Page (FYP). The aim is to transcend the limitations of watching videos on traditional smartphone screens.
What is the experience like on the VR headset?
In the TikTok Vision Pro app, the comment section and creator profiles appear on the side of the feed as expansions. The navigation bar and like button are also moved off-screen to allow a full-video experience. If you open the comments, it appears as a partially translucent panel on the right.
The Apple Vision Pro offers an immersive viewing experience, allowing users to enjoy TikTok videos in diverse environments, from Yosemite to the moon. With its Shared Space feature, users can multitask, watching TikTok content while using other apps simultaneously. However, the app does not support content creation or uploading at present.s
Ahmad Zahran, Product Leader at TikTok said: “It was a master-class in product development and I’m certain most other big tech companies wouldn’t have been able to turn it around the way we did.”
TikTok is among the 1,000 apps that are now available for the Vision Pro. YouTube, one of the biggest competitors for TikTok, has said that a Vision Pro app is on the roadmap. This also means that TikTok has a slightly higher advantage being the first to launch their app.
What does this mean for video creators?
The immersive and interactive nature of the Vision Pro opens doors for creators to experiment with new video formats that wouldn’t work as well on a phone screen. Traditionally, TikTok thrives on short-form content. However, the immersive experience of the Vision Pro might get users hooked to engaging with more videos on a daily basis.
It also offers the potential for increased discovery, deeper audience engagement, and innovative storytelling. However, creators will need to be adaptable and embrace the challenges of this evolving platform.
