đ„Hot or Notđ§ - This week's digital trends
Susan Wojcicki steps down and Instagram's still copying everyone else's work
Hello,
Happy Sunday! Iâm back with a second instalment of the Interhactives newsletter Hot or Not! Thank you to everyone who has jumped back in this year. Weâve made it to week two đŸ and Iâm also celebrating my 7-year Twitterversary â which somehow doesnât feel very long. Anyway, enough of me! Letâs see whatâs rising up and whatâs falling behind in digital journalism.Â
đ§đœ TwitterÂ
Will Twitter ever rise the ranks of the list? Well, not this week. There was a minor panic as people discovered SMS two-factor authentication is now only available for Twitter Blue. But as it is the least secure form of 2FA, surely everyone reading this has an authenticator app... (she says downloading one herself!) And is this weekâs articles dragging Musk we have Vox, The Guardian, Washington Post, The Atlantic and many many many more.
đ§đŒ InstagramÂ
The Gram keeps copying other peopleâs work. In a desperate attempt to be everyoneâs go-to app, theyâre introducing broadcast channels. Working something like a Telegram or Whatsapp chat, creators can have a group chat with (or more accurately to) their followers. Will people claim to hate it like reels or will they mostly ignore it like notes. Who knows? Matt Navarra also posted earlier today that Meta is introducing their own paid verification system. Elon is in his influencer era. And rumours continue to swirl about when Meta will inevitably kill reels with no warning. Â
đ„đœ TikTokÂ
Whilst TikTokâs popularity is on fire, it may be heading into more hot water. Semafor unpack privacy concerns and internal culture at ByteDance. Closer to home, there has been condemnation of âTikTok sleuthsâ weighing in on the case of Nicola Bulley. Journalists may want to take care when posting on the app. In more positive news, TikTok have added new analytics tools for business accounts. Â
đ„đŒ YouTubeÂ
Susan Wojcicki is stepping down after nine years as YouTubeâs CEO causing a mass reflection of her time leading the platform. Some are more positive than others. YouTube also announced a few features earlier in the week including comment replies and expanded analytics for Shorts.
Whatâs new with InterhacktivesÂ
Interhacktives is gearing up again. We have two new articles out this week. In the first ChatGPT tries to convince you it is hear with good intentions and not after your job, and in the second we take you through some tips and tricks to ensure your digital journalism is accessible.Â
Thatâs all for now folks. Thank you for joining me this week. Iâd love to hear your feedback on the newsletter - you can find me and Interhactives on most of your favourite social media sites or leave a comment on the Substack. I hope you all have a good week ahead, and Iâll see you in the next one. Â
